hinterland
Wanting to live closer to the earth, we moved to the country 20 years ago. Since then I have been seduced, somewhat secluded and totally amazed by the allure of my surroundings. The spacial quality of openness, marks made by nature and man challenge, thrill and instruct my art.
My hinterland is indeed uncharted area that remains beyond what is visible or known. My challenge remains to express the discoveries of the surroundings in new ways.
The old barns in my surroundings are constant reminders of American history. They tell the story of handmade, utilitarian structures that became design icons. I see them as symbols with personality that I paint in a semi-abstract manner. Many are falling down now being replaced by produced metal structures. I wish to keep the memory of the antique barns alive.
